Help Victims of Disasters…and More

Last year, the Southeast Louisiana Chapter responded to a disaster every 8 hours, making it the 4th busiest chapter in the country. Our Disaster Planning & Response volunteers are on the front lines, out on the streets and in communities, day and night, to meet the needs of families and residents with food, clothing, temporary housing, emotional support and emergency supplies.

Disaster Planning & Response training courses include:

Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion into Community Action is an instructor-led, entry-level course that introduces the mission of the Red Cross, the principles and values that support the mission, and the expected behaviors of Red Cross volunteers and employees in the conduct of the mission. The course will enable individual volunteers to translate their care and compassion for their community into action and provide information to other community agencies on Red Cross work and possible partnership in preparation for and response to a disaster.

Bulk Distribution Operations is an instructor-led, basic level course where participants will learn the roles, responsibilities, and tasks involved in setting up, operating and supporting a Bulk Distribution operation in the chapter and on a disaster relief operation.

Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance is designed to train Red Cross caseworkers how to conduct effective client interviews and provide appropriate assistance to help meet a client’s immediate disaster-caused and disaster-aggravated needs. This learning experience consists of a series of short instructor and video presentations interleaved with class discussions, which focus on the skills, knowledge and attitudes required of a Red Cross caseworker.  This learning experience culminates in an interactive, hands-on simulated activity during which participants are provided the opportunity to conduct interviews, assess client needs and determine the appropriate assistance, using the tools and resources available to caseworkers.

Disaster Assessment Basics is an instructor-led, basic level course.  The course encompasses the tasks and responsibilities of the Disaster Assessment activity on a disaster relief operation.  The course includes a section on local disaster incidents, which may be customized by the instructor for a local disaster program.  This course is not a replacement of Disaster Assessment Fundamentals course; it is a complimentary course.  This new course is designed for local community volunteers, primarily Disaster Action Team (DAT) members.

DAT (Disaster Action Team) Workshop is an instructor-led course that will teach volunteers about responding to home fires and other local disasters. It will introduce them to topics such as: damage assessment and client casework. Volunteers interested in participating on their regional Disaster Action Team should sign up for this class!

ERVs: Ready, Set, Roll is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn about and use an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) and all related equipment.  The purpose of this basic level Emergency Services course is to prepare Red Cross employees and volunteers to operate an ERV and its equipment safely and effectively to meet feeding and other service needs of people affected by disaster.

Logistics Overview is an instructor-led, basic level course designed to give participants an overview of the Logistics group and the processes of Logistics activities in support of an American Red Cross disaster relief operation. Participants will learn about the skills, abilities, and knowledge needed by Logistics workers and how they can become involved in their local chapter.

Mass Care Overview is a course designed to introduce the learners to the activities for the Mass Care group—Feeding, Sheltering, Bulk Distribution, and Community Programs.  It involves video segments, instructor lectures and classroom discussion.  The purpose of this basic level Disaster Services training is to provide an overview of the activities preformed by the Mass Care group in support of a disaster relief operation.

Psychological First Aid is an instructor-led, basic level that provides a framework for understanding the factors that affect stress responses in disaster relief workers and the clients they serve.  The purpose of this course is to prepare ALL American Red Cross workers to provide basic care, comfort and support to people who are experiencing disaster-related stress.

Shelter Operations is an instructor-led, basic level course designed to give participants an overview of the American Red Cross policies and procedures for setting up, running, and closing a shelter during a disaster. Participants will learn to manage shelter operations effectively and sensitively as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster.
