Administration/Management Intern
Position Description

  • Overview: Assist in project planning, presentations and public relations
  • Compensation: Unpaid
  • Semester needed: year-round
  • Hours: 10 - 20 hours/week, flexible
  • Perks: The American Red Cross is a nationally known organization that offers a variety of programs and services. This intern position provides the opportunity for individuals to gain experience in public speaking, project planning and community outreach.

Community Outreach Intern
Position Description

  • Overview: Work with paid staff and volunteers to ensure the implementation of Red Cross disaster preparedness and community education programs in targeted communities.
  • Compensation: (Unpaid)
  • Duration of internship: Year-Round
  • Hours: 10-20 hours/week
  • Perks: Opportunity to see large non-profit humanitarian organization in action; Opportunity to support community collaboration and partnerships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Promote and deliver Red Cross preparedness/education programs in targeted neighborhoods
  • Identify logistical needs and coordinate special events needs
  • Map community assets
  • Prepare research material for targeted groups
  • Research and identify grant opportunities
  • Assist Community Outreach Coordinators in attending community events, meetings, fundraising campaigns and other outreach functions

Training

Volunteer Management Intern
Position Description

  • Overview: To assist the American Red Cross of Southeast Louisiana in recruiting, training, and retaining volunteers to assist with our chapter’s programs and services.
  • Compensation: (Unpaid)
  • Duration of Internship: One semester
  • Hours: Vary according to office. Average of 10-20 hours per week. Flexible schedule.

Key Responsibilities

  • Writing correspondence and assimilating printed materials
  • Communication with other agencies and organizations to recruit volunteers
  • Writing stories about the volunteer programs for the newsletters and the website

Public Relations Intern
Position Description

  • Overview: To assist the facilitation of media coverage of Red Cross activities, events and services and to inform Red Cross volunteers, donors, and staff of our activities, programs and services through local publications and website.   
  • Compensation: Unpaid
  • Semesters needed: Year-round
  • Hours: Vary according to office. Average 10-20 hours per week, flexible.

This intern position provides the opportunity to see a large non-profit organization in action and to gain media relation skills working with all types of media and the Red Cross public relations staff.

Key Responsibilities

  • To assist the chapter PR department in writing and promoting newsworthy stories to increase Red Cross visibility.
  • To assist the chapter with the promotion of major events/projects via local media outlets.
  • To assist with graphic art design of publications and flyers.
  • To assist with website maintenance.

Qualifications

  • Public Relations or Journalism major or related field
  • Ability to communicate professionally with the media
  • Good written and communication skills
  • Public speaking skills
  • Knowledge of desktop publishing software (Publisher, Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Basic knowledge of content management website maintenance (additional training provided)
  • Manage multiple projects and be able to meet deadlines

Special Events Intern
Position Description  

  • Plan special Red Cross events in the community
  • Compensation: Unpaid
  • Semester needed: Fall, Spring, Winter, or any combination
  • Hours: 10-20 hours a week, flexible hours
  • Perks: Fun and friendly working environment, gain experience working with volunteers and coordinating special events, make contacts with the community, learn more about working within non-profit organizations

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate volunteers that may be helping with Special Events
  • Collaborate with the community, and volunteers and staff to plan Red Cross events

Qualifications

  • College or graduate student
  • Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or other related major
  • Excellent organizational, communication skills; computer skills,ability to work with diverse group, and demonstration of leadership skills

Sales Account Specialist (Full Service and AP customers)

Position Description 

  • Compensation: Unpaid
  • Semesters needed: Year-round
  • Hours: Flexible (Any day(s) of the week Monday-Friday)
  • Reports to: Director, Health & Safety

Key Responsibilities

  • Organize Full-Service and AP Files (A-Z) and separate current from non-current accounts.
  • Ensure data is correct and updated on all accounts.
  • Verify training interest with non-current customers.
  • Quantify leads and provide to Account Representative
  • Re-file all accounts that have no interest in the lapsed customer files

    • Health Services, Business degree or equivalent work experience required
    • Must have excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills

Sales/Telemarketing Assistant

Position Description

  • Compensation: unpaid
  • Semesters needed: one or more semesters
  • Hours: Flexible (Any day(s) of the week Monday-Friday)- Any time between 8:30 AM- 4:30 PM
  • Reports to: Director, Health & Safety 

 

Development Opportunities

Key Responsabilities

  • Research and make a list of business & industry prospects.
  • Utilize Sales Inquiry form, pre-quanitify prospects via cold-calling.
  • Follow up with sales calls to market services & products (including AED's).
    Fax or email targeted information to the prospects as needed.
  • Forward all interested prospects to Account Coordinator.

 

Qualifications

  • Sales/marketing, business degree or equivalent work experience required.
  • Must have excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of the American Red Cross a plus.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and a good driving record.

Grant Researcher Intern
Position Description

  • Overview: Conducts research and makes suggestions to which grants and funding opportunities would be suitable granting sources for the chapter. Helps to assist Financial Development Dept in meeting annual fundraising goals.
  • Compensation: Unpaid
  • Semesters needed: Year-round
  • Hours: Hours vary, 10-20 hours a week. Flexible
  • Perks: The American Red Cross is a nationally known organization that offers a variety of programs and services. This intern position provides the opportunity to see a large non-profit organization in action and to help the community prepare for and respond to disaster situations. Most importantly, this intern position provides the opportunity to teach people the skills they need to save a life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Researches possible leads and strategies to meet fundraising goals in relation to annual campaign and grant proposals.
  • Conducts thorough research to identify available grant funding opportunities. This includes foundations, corporate, state and federal funding.
  • Assists the Grants Coordinator with the completion of grant proposals, ensures they are within specified guidelines, and representative of a variety of funding priorities.
  • To be knowledgeable about the types of programs and services offered by  the American Red Cross and be able to describe and write about them for a variety of audiences.
  • Performs other office duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in school and working towards degree in related field
  • Strong ability to write, edit, and conduct professional research.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and public speaking skills.
  • Working knowledge of computers with experience in Microsoft applications.
