The American Red Cross is one of several community organizations working together to respond to disasters. Your local Red Cross recruits, trains and places volunteers who make valuable contributions, from the front lines of a disaster to the background of office support.
We match knowledge, skills, interests and experience of individuals with opportunities to serve the community.
Nationwide approximately 1.2. million people volunteer for the American Red Cross, and volunteers make up 97% of all American Red Cross staff. Our volunteers come from all walks of life, and over 40% of volunteers are people under the age of 25. | | |

Disaster Volunteers
Volunteers are trained to respond to local and/or national disasters. You could serve in areas such as sheltering, family services, disaster health services, disaster mental health services, mass care, logistics, and communications.
Community Shelter Teams
This group of volunteers plays a key role in responding to disasters such as flooding and large-scale fires that cause multiple unit evacuations. Individuals or groups of community members are needed to create teams willing to respond in the moments after a disaster strikes. Let the local Red Cross train you to help your neighbors when they need it most. Training is free but required. Disaster Action Team
The Disaster Action (DAT) volunteer responds to the scene of a disaster to provide immediate assistance to the individuals and families affected, whether it is one person at a house fire or 300 people evacuated to a shelter because of a flood.
The DAT volunteers signs up for 6 to 24 hours shifts at a time, responds from home as called and works as part of a 2-4 person team. Basic training is offered free of charge to the volunteer and includes classroom courses, as well as on the job training.
Disaster Public Affairs Team
Help spread the word of our assistance by talking with the media, informing them of how we're helping families and keeping them up - to - date on details of our assistance. Volutneers represent the American Red Cross in emergency situations - fires, floods, chemical spills or other natural disasters. Responsiblities include going to a scene and doing stand up interviess with the media and responding to any media calls or disasters while "on-call". Training is free but required. Armed Forces Caseworkers
Help put military families in touch during times of personal emergencies. Volunteers work with local members of the military and their families ensuring delivery of emergency communications.
Community Education Presenters
This special group of volunteers presents safety information to community groups such as schools, businesses and civic organizations.Volunteers mus be comfortable in a publc setting and public speaking.
Youth and Young Adults
Youth volunteers are encouraged to volunteer answering phones, doing office work, help with mailings, preparing materials for classes and computer data entry. Youth volunteers and school administration can form high school clubs in their school or organization that allow students to participate in organized meetings and service learning projects that help their community or school. Projects are compatible with school policy and based on school needs. Internships are available.
Health and Safety Instructors
If you are intereste in teaching and learning life saving skills this may be the program for you. The best way to avoid and cope with emergencies is to be prepared when they occur. We are looking for people interested in in teaching the neccessary skills to confidently respond to emergencies. Our programs teach many life-saving skills including water safety, lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR and AED. First Aid Teams are needed to help staff special events throughout the year. Advanced medical training is helpful but not required. Advanced Red Cross First Aid and CPR skills are neccessary. Training is available.
Office Assistants
Volunteers provide general clerical functions such as typing, answering telephones, data entry, filing, and special projects
Special Events/Activities
This special group of volunteers represents the Red Cross at outreach events such as Health & Safety fairs, business eduction events, school fairs, trade shows, fundraisers, and other community activites. They perform outreach duties to raise awareness for the local Red Cross in our 12 parishes. Volunteers must be comfortable in public settings and public speaking.
